Inter Milan have identified Genoa centre-back Leo Ostigard as a potential replacement for Stefan De Vrij, who is expected to complete a move to Panathinaikos after deciding not to renew his contract with the Serie A giants.
The Dutch defender’s departure is virtually confirmed, with the Greek side poised to secure his signature. This forces Simone Inzaghi to reshuffle his defensive options ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, with the Norwegian international emerging as a serious candidate to fill the void.
Ostigard’s Rising Stock
The 26-year-old enjoyed an outstanding season in Liguria, scoring five goals in 31 Serie A appearances. He has carried that form onto the international stage, recently netting against Iraq for Norway at the World Cup.
Ostigard already boasts Serie A pedigree beyond his current club, having been part of Napoli’s Scudetto-winning squad in the 2022-23 season. However, securing his services will prove challenging. Genoa exercised their permanent purchase option from Rennes for just €2.5 million in January and have no desire to let him leave cheaply. Furthermore, the defender has expressed no wish to depart.
Inter’s Waiting Game
Complicating matters further, Inter are unlikely to push hard for Ostigard immediately. While the Genoa man is targeted as De Vrij’s successor, Oumar Solet remains the club’s priority signing to replace Francesco Acerbi.
Reports suggest Inter may delay revisiting the Ostigard pursuit until they have confirmed deals for Solet and other targets, including goalkeeper Provedel and defender Palestra. With Genoa holding firm and the player content to stay, the Nerazzurri will need patience and a compelling offer to secure this defensive reinforcement.
