New Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca has begun reshaping his squad by recruiting a teenager he previously managed during his spell at Leicester City. The move forms part of a busy summer window across Europe’s top five leagues, where clubs continue to trade players.

The deal highlights a trend of coaches bringing familiar faces to new projects. Maresca identified the young talent from his Championship-winning campaign with the Foxes.

Serie B emerges as development hub

Italy’s second tier has become a popular destination for emerging talents seeking regular minutes. A 6ft 4in goalkeeper who featured in the Next Gen 2023 selection has secured another Serie B loan following a spell at Sampdoria during the latter half of last season. The 26-year-old expressed his excitement about the move, stating: “I didn’t hesitate for a moment.”

Another Next Gen graduate, who made his senior debut for Italy in June, has joined a second-tier side on loan with both an option to buy and a counter-option included in the agreement. An Italy Under-21 left-back has also been loaned out again after previous spells at Sangiovannese, Pescara and Empoli.

Fiorentina have sent an Italy Under-20 centre-back to a Belgian side, where he will link up with teammate Tommaso Rubino. The defender described the transfer as “a significant step in my career.” Meanwhile, an Italy Under-19 forward has returned to a Serie B club on a fresh temporary deal after impressing during the previous campaign, declaring: “I’m very happy to be back.”

A 20-year-old centre-forward has also joined a Serie B outfit on loan, stating he “can’t wait to get started.” Elsewhere in the Italian market, a 23-year-old striker has earned promotion to Serie A after scoring 13 goals in 30 appearances last season.

Moves across the continent

In Belgium, an England Under-20 centre-back has secured a season-long loan as he seeks to accumulate first-team minutes.

Spain has seen permanent departures from La Liga. Villarreal have released a 23-year-old attacking midfielder who played for Cultural Leonesa on loan last term. The player leaves the Yellow Submarine permanently.

In Poland, a 22-year-old left-back has departed a newly promoted La Liga side to sign a three-year contract. In Germany, an experienced Austrian international goalkeeper—who represented his nation at the World Cup—has moved between Bundesliga divisions.

At Augsburg, a 19-year-old centre-back who progressed through the academy from Under-13 level has left as a makeweight in the Sima Suso deal.

A versatile 29-year-old capable of operating at right-back or in midfield has also joined a second-division side on a two-year contract.
