1. FC Köln have completed the signing of Ghana international Gideon Mensah, with the 27-year-old left-back joining the club on a free transfer from AJ Auxerre.
The defender has committed to a two-year contract with the Billy Goats, arriving with international pedigree following his appearances at the World Cup. Mensah comes highly rated from French football, where he featured for Auxerre last season.
Kessler Hails Defensive Reinforcement
Managing director Thomas Kessler revealed the club had tracked Mensah for an extended period before securing his signature. “We have been monitoring the defender for some time and are delighted to bring him on board,” Kessler stated.
He highlighted the full-back’s key attributes, noting that he “offers international pedigree, impressed in France last season and demonstrated that quality at the World Cup.” Kessler praised Mensah’s team-first mentality, strong tactical discipline and considerable defensive strengths, adding that he “adds dynamism” to the squad. The managing director emphasised that the signing increases competition and provides greater stability in the defensive unit.
Mensah Drawn by Cologne Project
The Ghanaian revealed he rejected alternative offers following the World Cup, citing an immediate connection with the club’s representatives. “After the World Cup, I had several options,” Mensah explained. “In talks with those responsible at FC, who showed real interest in me, I had the best feeling from the very start.”
He identified the sporting vision presented by Köln as a decisive factor, while also expressing enthusiasm about the club’s famous supporter culture. “I obviously looked into the city and heard a lot about the incredible support of the FC fans, and I’m really looking forward to that,” he said.
Mensah pledged full commitment to the club’s objectives, insisting he would give everything to help Köln achieve its goals, just as he had done for Ghana and his previous employers.
