Gabin Bernardeau has completed a permanent transfer to FC Lorient from OGC Nice, signing a four-year contract with the Brittany club. The France youth international moves for a reported fee of €1m, though the official amount remains undisclosed by either side.

The 20-year-old midfielder struggled to secure regular playing time at the Allianz Riviera following his arrival from Le Mans FC last summer. Despite joining Les Aiglons on a free transfer with promising credentials, he managed only eight appearances across all competitions during the recent campaign, failing to establish himself in the senior squad.

Productive foundation at Le Mans

Bernardeau originally developed through the ranks at Le Mans FC, where he enjoyed a breakthrough season in the National division during 2022-23. Operating in midfield, he made 30 league appearances for the third-tier club, contributing three goals and eight assists before earning his step up to Ligue 1.

His performances in the third tier attracted Nice, who secured his signature without a transfer fee. However, the transition to top-flight football proved challenging, with limited opportunities to impress among established internationals.

Long-term project for Lorient

The move to Les Merlus offers Bernardeau a chance to revive his career under new manager Alexandre Dujeux, who takes charge of the team for the upcoming season. The four-year contract indicates the club’s confidence in his potential development, suggesting they view him as a project for the future rather than merely short-term cover.

Exchange with Abergel finalised

The transfer forms part of a midfield exchange between the two clubs. Laurent Abergel has moved in the opposite direction, joining Nice from Lorient, with the experienced midfielder already unveiled as a new recruit at the Allianz Riviera.

At 20 years old, Bernardeau still has significant scope for progression. Lorient will hope to provide the regular minutes necessary for him to develop from promising France youth international to established professional, something that proved impossible during his solitary season on the Côte d’Azur.
