Aston Villa have opened internal discussions about signing Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha as manager Unai Emery looks to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign.
The Midlands club are weighing up whether to submit a formal offer for the 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder. However, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that no talks have occurred between Villa and Bayern Munich at this stage, meaning any agreement remains distant while officials consider their options.
Loan or Permanent Deal?
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the structure of the potential deal. The Athletic reports that Villa are considering a loan arrangement. Conversely, Teamtalk confirms negotiations for a permanent deal, claiming Villa hope to secure Palhinha for approximately €23.5 million.
The discrepancy highlights the early stage of discussions. Villa must first decide whether to pursue a temporary solution or commit to a long-term arrangement for the defensive midfielder.
Bayern Munich stance
Palhinha faces an uncertain future at the Allianz Arena despite holding a contract until 2028. The midfielder spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur after joining Bayern from Fulham in 2023. Bayern have placed him on their transfer list as they look to reshape their squad.
Portuguese giants Benfica Lisbon had also attempted to sign the player. Those efforts now look likely to collapse. The Portuguese club cannot meet the financial demands of the overall transfer package for the 31-year-old.
European Ambitions
Villa’s interest represents a potential return to English football for Palhinha. Emery’s side qualified for the Champions League after finishing fourth last season and continue to strengthen their squad to compete on multiple fronts.
Any deal remains contingent on Villa formalising their approach with Bayern Munich. The structure of any potential transfer – whether loan or permanent – remains unclear as discussions continue between the Midlands club and the player’s representatives.
