Atletico Madrid have reignited their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Aleix García, marking the third occasion the La Liga club have attempted to secure his signature. Director Mateu Alemany is managing the recruitment drive, with García identified as a realistic target ahead of the summer transfer window.
This renewed interest follows two previous unsuccessful approaches. Atletico first targeted the 28-year-old during last summer’s transfer window and returned with fresh enquiries in January, but failed to complete a deal on both occasions. Despite these setbacks, the Spanish club have maintained their admiration for the former Girona playmaker.
Valuation and Alternatives
Leverkusen are reportedly seeking approximately €25 million to sanction García’s departure. The German club signed him from Girona in 2024 for €18 million and secured him to a contract running until 2029. His current market value stands at around €20 million, according to transfer assessments.
The €25 million asking price positions García as a more affordable option compared to other targets on Atletico’s shortlist. Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand is under consideration as an alternative, though the Denmark international carries a valuation closer to €45 million. This significant price difference suggests García represents a pragmatic, experienced addition rather than a marquee investment for Diego Simeone’s side.
On-Field Impact
García’s credentials are strengthened by an impressive 2025-26 campaign in which he made 50 appearances across all competitions. The midfielder scored six goals and provided eleven assists, featuring in 33 Bundesliga matches and twelve Champions League fixtures. Statistical rankings placed him as the highest-rated midfielder in the Bundesliga, earning selection in the league’s team of the season.
These performances have elevated García as a potential complement or replacement for Conor Gallagher in Atletico’s engine room. His ability to organise play, cover defensive ground and contribute directly to goals aligns with Simeone’s tactical demands.
Player Stance and Parallel Talks
Despite Atletico’s persistent interest, García has maintained a measured position regarding his future. Speaking to Diario AS in February, he acknowledged previous contact: “Yes, I know there have been calls. But I always say that when it rings and nothing happens, it’s because it wasn’t meant to happen. And as I’m at Leverkusen, I’m delighted and I want to carry on.”
However, the Spain international left the door open to a potential switch, stating: “I can see myself, yes. That’s clear. I know it’s complicated because they’re three of the biggest clubs in the world. Maybe they look for slightly younger profiles, but I can clearly see myself. I think I’m playing at a good level at Leverkusen, and if it ever came, it would be welcome.”
Atletico’s negotiations with Leverkusen extend beyond García. The clubs are also in discussions regarding defender Alejandro Grimaldo, potentially creating a complex dual-transaction scenario. The next step depends on whether Atletico formalise their interest with a concrete offer matching Leverkusen’s €25 million valuation.
