Dutch midfielder Branco van den Boomen is set to terminate his contract with Ajax and join Angers SCO as a free agent, according to Mohamed Toubache-Ter. The 30-year-old is expected to sign a three-year deal, keeping him at the French club until 2029.

The move marks a permanent return to Angers following a productive loan spell last winter. Van den Boomen started 14 of the 15 matches he played under manager Alexandre Dujeux during the 2025-26 campaign, registering one assist. That consistent run allowed him to regain the regular playing time that had eluded him in the Netherlands.

Injury-plagued Amsterdam spell

Van den Boomen originally joined Ajax in the summer of 2023, leaving Toulouse FC after contributing 23 goals and 45 assists in 121 appearances for the French side. The transfer represented a homecoming for the Veldhoven-born midfielder, who had previously progressed through the Ajax youth ranks.

However, his second spell with the Amsterdam club was severely disrupted. Several injury setbacks kept him sidelined for weeks at a time, preventing him from establishing himself as an undisputed first-team regular. Despite holding a contract until 2027, the persistent fitness issues limited his impact and convinced both parties to pursue an early termination, allowing him to leave as a free agent.

Fresh start under Dujeux

The anticipated switch to Angers offers Van den Boomen the opportunity to build on the trust he earned during his temporary stay. Working under Dujeux, he demonstrated his ability to influence matches at the top level, starting all but one of his appearances after arriving in the winter.

For Angers, the deal represents shrewd business. They secure an experienced midfielder with proven quality in the French top flight without paying a transfer fee. Meanwhile, Ajax reduce their wage bill and clear space in their squad as they continue their rebuilding process.

Van den Boomen’s departure closes a frustrating chapter for the player and club alike, while offering him the continuity required to revive a career that had stalled through no fault of his own.
