PULSER FOOTBALL NEWS-1

RCD Espanyol have announced the dismissal of head coach Manolo González, effective October 27, 2026. The decision comes hours after the club suffered a dramatic 4-3 extra-time defeat to Sestao River in the Copa del Rey.

The decisive goal for Sestao River was scored by Jon Rojo in the 121st minute, just as the match appeared to be heading for a penalty shootout. The cup exit adds to a challenging period for Espanyol, who have struggled for form in LaLiga.

Recent Struggles and Cup Heartbreak

Before their Copa del Rey encounter, Espanyol had secured only one point from their previous 15 available in LaLiga. This poor league run, combined with the cup elimination, intensified pressure on González.

The match against Sestao River was a rollercoaster. Espanyol initially took the lead from a penalty, but Sestao River responded to go 2-1 up. Espanyol then equalised with a second penalty in the 90th minute, and Gabriel Moscardo put them ahead 3-2 in extra time. However, Ander Laka quickly levelled for Sestao River before Rojo’s late winner sealed Espanyol’s fate. The game was played in heavy rain, making the pitch conditions difficult.

González’s Tenure Concludes

Manolo González had been at the helm of Espanyol for over three seasons. Under his leadership, the club finished 11th in LaLiga during the 2025/26 campaign. Sporting director Monchi had previously expressed full backing for González, but the recent string of results ultimately led to the change.

González had reached his 100th official match for Espanyol in early September, making him one of the club’s longer-serving coaches by games managed. On the eve of the Sestao River tie, González acknowledged the team’s poor results and stated his commitment to fighting for the club.

Looking Ahead

Espanyol must now quickly regroup as they prepare for their next LaLiga fixture. They are scheduled to travel to Villarreal on October 30. The club will be seeking a swift turnaround in fortunes as they aim to improve their league position following González’s departure.
