VfB Stuttgart have indicated a readiness to sanction Josha Vagnoman’s departure during the current transfer window, yet negotiations with Hull City have stalled over the structure of any potential agreement.

Stalemate over transfer terms

The newly-promoted Premier League side have identified the 25-year-old right-back as a defensive reinforcement as they prepare for life in England’s top tier. However, a fundamental disagreement regarding the transfer formula threatens to prevent the move from progressing.

Hull City favour a loan arrangement that would allow them to assess Vagnoman’s suitability for English football without an immediate capital outlay. Stuttgart, by contrast, are seeking a permanent sale and have established a valuation of between €10 million and €15 million for the defender.

This divergence in approach has prompted Stuttgart to refrain from intensifying discussions with the Yorkshire club. The Bundesliga outfit invested €4.5 million to acquire Vagnoman from Hamburger SV in 2022 and now wish to recoup a significant profit whilst removing his wages from their books permanently.

Valuation reflects inconsistent spell

Stuttgart’s asking price represents a substantial markup on the initial outlay, though sources suggest the club internally views the valuation as justified despite acknowledging that Vagnoman’s displays have fluctuated during his 124 appearances across all competitions.

Since arriving in the Bundesliga, the defender has also secured two caps for Germany’s senior side, adding international pedigree to his domestic experience. These credentials have evidently attracted Hull’s attention as they seek top-flight quality, though Stuttgart’s insistence on an outright sale currently blocks the path.

What happens next

The impasse leaves Hull City facing a decision over whether to meet Stuttgart’s financial demands or pursue alternative defensive reinforcements. For Vagnoman, a switch to the Premier League would represent a significant career step, though the pathway remains dependent on whether Hull can satisfy Stuttgart’s preference for a permanent transfer.

With the window progressing, Stuttgart may yet attract alternative suitors willing to pay the requested fee, potentially forcing Hull to adjust their strategy if they wish to secure the German international’s signature.
