Juventus have opened preliminary talks with Roma regarding goalkeeper Mile Svilar as their pursuit of alternative targets encounters obstacles. The Bianconeri are actively seeking a new first-choice shot-stopper this summer, but negotiations for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario have stalled.

According to reports in Italy, the Turin club has turned its attention to Svilar, the 26-year-old who has collected Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper Award for the past two consecutive seasons. The Serbian international is contracted to Roma until 2030, placing the Giallorossi in a commanding negotiating position.

Valuation gap and FFP pressures

Roma reportedly value Svilar at €60 million, though Juventus are hoping the club might eventually lower their demands to €50 million. However, the Bianconeri face their own financial limitations and currently appear unable to table an offer matching Roma’s valuation.

The situation is complicated by Financial Fair Play requirements. Both clubs must record a capital gain by the end of this month to avoid potential sanctions. While this deadline might normally encourage a deal, Roma are understood to be reluctant to sacrifice key assets merely to satisfy accounting requirements.

Conflicting reports over negotiations

Despite claims of initial contact between the clubs, Roma have denied that active negotiations are ongoing with their Serie A rivals. According to Corriere dello Sport, the Giallorossi received no response from Juventus after revealing their €60 million asking price.

Juventus sporting director Giovanni Carnevali recently emphasised the urgency of securing a goalkeeper, stating: “The goalkeeper and striker are priorities, these are fundamental roles for a team.” He added: “We have to work calmly, because as of today, there are some economic demands that are very elevated.”

What happens next

The coming days will prove crucial as both clubs assess their FFP positions before the month-end deadline. While Svilar represents a proven option already familiar with Italian football, the significant gap between Juventus’ financial capacity and Roma’s valuation suggests any transfer would require complex negotiations or creative structuring to materialise.
