Stefan Posch is undergoing a medical examination at FSV Mainz 05 as he closes in on a permanent return to the Bundesliga club. The Austrian defender is set to complete a transfer from Serie A side Como after the clubs agreed a fee of approximately €4 million, according to Sky Germany.
The move was made possible after Como secured Yan Couto on a season-long loan from Borussia Dortmund. The Brazilian right-back’s arrival significantly altered Como’s defensive options, leaving Posch surplus to requirements and prompting the Italian club to negotiate his departure.
Mutual desire drives transfer
Posch made clear his preference to remain in Germany rather than continue in Serie A. The 29-year-old Austrian international previously spent time at Mainz and was eager to return on a permanent basis.
Head coach Urs Fischer also strongly advocated for the reunion, with the Bundesliga club demonstrating their commitment by stretching their financial parameters to accommodate the deal. The alignment between player, coach and board proved crucial in pushing the negotiations forward.
Deal timeline
Mainz initiated formal negotiations with Como at the start of August following Posch’s indication that he wished to stay in the Bundesliga. The talks progressed rapidly, culminating in the €4 million agreement.
The defender will sign his contract with Mainz upon successfully completing the medical examination. The transfer represents a significant piece of business for the club, securing a proven performer who is already familiar with the squad and Fischer’s tactical approach.
