Scotland’s World Cup campaign has concluded at the group stage after Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana confirmed they would not progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Steve Clarke’s side finished with three points and a goal difference of minus three, a tally that was always likely to prove insufficient for progression. The elimination, which had appeared increasingly inevitable over recent days, was mathematically sealed by Saturday’s results in Group L.

The Tartan Army began their tournament with promise, securing a 1-0 victory over Haiti at the Boston Stadium. However, their prospects dimmed with a subsequent 1-0 defeat to Morocco. The decisive setback came against Brazil in Miami, where a calamitous start saw the Scots fall behind after just six minutes to a Vinícius Júnior strike. Two additional goals from the five-time world champions left Scotland under severe pressure and effectively eliminated from contention.

Clarke was uncharacteristically critical in his post-match assessment following the Brazil defeat. “We have to be better if we want to compete at this level,” he said. The comments reflected the manager’s frustration at his team’s inability to match the standards required at global tournaments.

Despite the early exit, Clarke’s position remains secure. The 62-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Scottish FA immediately before the World Cup, a deal that was vigorously defended by officials at the time. The squad had returned to their training base in Charlotte on Thursday but will now prepare to travel home.

The World Cup departure may signal the end of the international road for some members of Scotland’s experienced but ageing squad. Attention now shifts to the Nations League, with fixtures against Slovenia and Switzerland scheduled for September. These matches will provide Clarke with an opportunity to assess his options and begin rebuilding ahead of the next qualification campaign.
