Paris Saint-Germain have secured their status as one of Europe’s most dominant football clubs by retaining the Champions League trophy. The French giants defeated Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout to lift the coveted prize for the second consecutive year.

The match ended one goal apiece after regular time in Budapest, forcing the final to be decided from the penalty spot. PSG held their nerve to win 4-3, repeating their continental success from twelve months ago when they thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich.

This achievement makes them only the second club in the modern Champions League era to defend their title successfully. The last side to manage this feat was Real Madrid, who captured three straight trophies between 2016 and 2018. Across the competition’s entire history, just ten clubs have managed back-to-back victories.

Manager Luis Enrique expressed his emotions following the triumph. “I feel mixed emotions,” he stated. “There is excitement, tiredness, everything combined. However, this represents the finest moment of the season. We remain champions for the second year running, which is remarkable.”

The Spanish coach has now won the competition three times as a manager, placing him alongside legends Bob Paisley, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, and Zinedine Zidane. He also lifted the trophy as a Barcelona player in 2015. Remarkably, reports suggest he initially declined the PSG job when first approached in 2023.

Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was the only new face in the starting eleven compared to last season’s final. He replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma, who moved to Manchester City last summer. All ten outfield players who featured against Arsenal also started the victory over Inter Milan.

PSG’s dominance extends beyond this single trophy. Over the past two campaigns, they have captured eight out of ten possible trophies, missing only the Club World Cup and the French Cup. Their attacking prowess was evident throughout this European campaign, netting 45 goals and maintaining over sixty percent possession on average.

The departure of star forward Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid in 2024 has not hindered the team’s progress. In fact, the club scored forty-four more goals across all competitions this season compared to Mbappe’s final year. Twenty different players found the net, highlighting the collective approach favoured by Luis Enrique over individual brilliance.

This victory also establishes PSG as France’s most successful club in the competition, surpassing rivals Marseille who have one title. It was their third final appearance, having lost to Bayern Munich in 2020 before their recent successes.

European football journalist Julien Laurens praised the achievement. “Tonight PSG have created history,” he commented. “Last season was special, but this triumph required greater resilience. They had to battle and recover from difficult situations. Back-to-back victories place them among the greatest sides of all time.”

The supporters displayed their affection for Luis Enrique throughout the event in Budapest. They unveiled a massive banner showing the manager lifting the trophy before kick-off. After the match, the coach danced with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi while celebrating with the fans, marking a transformation from the club’s previous struggles to win Europe’s premier competition.
