AS Roma have identified Quinten Timber as a potential midfield reinforcement as they look to take advantage of Olympique de Marseille‘s financial difficulties. The Italian side are monitoring the 25-year-old Dutchman, who only joined the Ligue 1 club from Feyenoord last winter for €4.5 million.

Roma face competition from Turkish club Besiktas JK for Timber’s signature. However, the Giallorossi believe Marseille’s precarious monetary situation could allow them to negotiate a favourable deal for a player who would otherwise be difficult to acquire.

Midfield alternatives

Despite their interest, Timber is not currently the primary target for Roma. According to reports, Celtic midfielder Arne Engels and Botafogo’s Danilo Santos sit higher on the club’s shortlist.

Both Engels, aged 22, and Santos, 25, are considered more immediate priorities as Roma look to strengthen their engine room for the upcoming Serie A campaign. Timber remains an alternative option should moves for the preferred targets fail to materialise before the transfer window closes.

Contract situation

Timber signed a contract with Marseille running until 2030 when he arrived in January. He has made 16 appearances for the French side since his switch from the Eredivisie.

Although he is tied to a long-term deal, Marseille’s financial constraints may force the club to consider offers for the midfielder just months after his arrival from the Netherlands. This has created a potential opportunity for Roma to secure his services at a reduced price, despite the eight-year contract he signed upon joining the Ligue 1 side.

The coming weeks will determine whether Roma formalise their interest with a concrete bid or focus their resources on securing Engels or Santos instead.
