Mainz continued their impressive pre-season preparations with a 4-1 victory over 2. Bundesliga outfit Kaiserslautern, though the result was tempered by an injury to summer signing Ransford Königsdörffer. Head coach Urs Fischer utilised the fixture to rotate his squad extensively, fielding entirely different line-ups for 60 minutes each as the match was contested in four quarters.
The Bundesliga side established control early, scoring twice inside the opening ten minutes. Phillip Tietz opened the scoring with a header from Antony Caci’s corner-kick, before Sheraldo Becker doubled the advantage with a well-placed curler from the edge of the penalty area. The first-half selection completed a three-goal cushion when Paul Nebel converted from the spot after Becker had been fouled inside the box.
Kaiserslautern found a response through former Germany international Mergim Berisha, who reduced the deficit following a significant gap in the scoring. However, Marco Richter—returning from a loan spell at 2. Bundesliga side Darmstadt—restored Mainz’s commanding lead with a powerful strike from distance to seal the result.
Squad Changes and Injury Concern
The victory was soured by a collision involving Königsdörffer and Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Yannick Onohiol, which forced the former Hamburg attacker from the field. The 22-year-old had begun his Mainz career brightly, netting three times in earlier friendly wins against amateur opposition Pfeddersheim and Eisbachtal.
Fischer also handed minutes to several summer acquisitions including Eric Martel, Fabio Gruber, Sota Kawasaki and Alynho Haidara. Absent from the matchday squad was Nelson Weiper, who departed for Austrian Bundesliga club Sturm Graz on loan shortly before kick-off. The young striker had signed off with a hat-trick in Mainz’s previous pre-season outing.
Looking Ahead
The comfortable win maintains Mainz’s perfect record during their summer schedule and provides further fitness for a squad adapting to Fischer’s methods. Kaiserslautern, who opened their pre-season account with a 5-3 victory over Sandhausen, will hope to carry attacking momentum into their league campaign despite this setback.
When Germany’s top two divisions commence in the final weekend of August, Mainz will welcome newly-promoted Paderborn to the Mewa Arena for their Bundesliga opener. Kaiserslautern face a daunting assignment to begin their fifth successive second-tier campaign, travelling to relegated VfL Wolfsburg.
