Key Takeaways

  • Chris Hughton, ex-Brighton and Newcastle manager, had prostate cancer surgery last May.
  • Doctors spotted the illness early and the operation was successful.
  • The 67-year-old now urges men to attend regular health checks.

Chris Hughton has told the public that doctors found prostate cancer during a routine check in April last year. The former Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion manager had the gland removed the next month and says the results were good.

“The news did not frighten me,” Hughton explained. “I simply thought, ‘We will handle this.'” The 67-year-old added that he still has plenty of energy one year after the procedure.

As a player Hughton made 398 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, winning two FA Cups and the 1984 Uefa Cup. He later earned 53 caps for the Republic of Ireland and ended his playing days at West Ham United and Brentford.

On the bench he led both Newcastle and Brighton to promotion into the Premier League. He also coached Birmingham City, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest and the Ghana national team.

Laura Kerby of Prostate Cancer UK praised Hughton for speaking out. She warned that the disease rarely shows early symptoms, so awareness and testing are vital for men over 50.
