Diego Simeone has spoken of his pride in the Atletico Madrid dressing room after their Champions League journey ended in the semi-finals against Arsenal. The Argentine boss watched his team fall short during the second leg on Tuesday night, bringing their first European campaign at this stage in nine years to a close.

Speaking to the media after the match, Simeone admitted that Arsenal fully deserved their place in the final. He pointed to his side’s failure to take chances during the first leg at home as a key reason for their elimination.

“If we are out of the competition, it is because our opponents earned the right to go through,” the manager stated. “They were ruthless in the first half and took their opportunities. I feel calm because the players gave everything. We could have won the first match in the second half, but we did not show enough cutting edge.”

Simeone noted that his team improved after the interval in the return fixture, yet conceded that small margins decided the tie. “We grew into the game after half-time and created openings, but those fine details that usually go our way did not help us this time,” he explained.

The match featured a controversial moment when Marc Pubill appeared to foul Gabriel Magalhaes, denying Antoine Griezmann what looked like a clear penalty. However, Simeone refused to blame officials for the defeat. “I will not focus on the Griezmann incident. It is clear what happened, but I do not want to make excuses. That would be looking for reasons to hide behind.”

Instead, the Atletico chief highlighted the financial gap between the clubs. He praised Mikel Arteta for building a strong squad with significant backing. “Arteta has done remarkable work. They possess serious financial muscle that shows in their performances. I am genuinely pleased for them; they have worked very hard.”

These comments reflect Simeone’s acceptance that Atletico cannot compete with Europe’s richest clubs on equal terms. He suggested that while the club has grown massively during his time in charge, supporters demand trophies rather than semi-final appearances.

Arteta, meanwhile, extended sympathy towards his rival. The Arsenal boss revealed he understands Simeone’s disappointment, having suffered similar pain in previous campaigns. The two coaches share mutual respect following their intense tactical battles across both legs.

The defeat effectively ends Atletico’s season without silverware, despite their impressive run to the last four. Simeone maintains that his group overachieved by pushing a wealthier opponent so close, though he recognises that moral victories offer little comfort to the club’s demanding fanbase.

At the final whistle, Simeone was seen attempting to rally the travelling supporters. He reserved special praise for captain Koke and forward Antoine Griezmann, urging fans to continue backing the Frenchman through the remaining domestic matches.
