Takehiro Tomiyasu is weighing up a return to Italian football, with both Sassuolo and Venezia holding active negotiations to secure the free agent defender.

The 27-year-old Japan international finds himself without a club following the expiration of his contract with Ajax. He initially moved to the Netherlands on a free transfer from Arsenal last summer, but his time at the Johan Cruyff Arena proved brief, leaving him available to join a new side without commanding a transfer fee.

Tomiyasu previously demonstrated his capabilities in Serie A during a productive spell with Bologna from 2019 to 2021. Across 61 league appearances for the Rossoblu, he contributed three goals and three assists, performances that eventually convinced Arsenal to pay €18.6 million for his services.

Positional flexibility attracts interest

The Japanese star’s versatility remains a key selling point for potential employers. Capable of performing at centre-back, right-back or left-back, he offers managers tactical adaptability across the defensive line. This flexibility has prompted both Sassuolo and newly-promoted Venezia to explore a deal.

Venezia’s pursuit has been sparked by an unfortunate injury to Marin Sverko. The defender requires surgery and faces several months of recovery, leaving the Venetian club desperately seeking experienced reinforcements as they prepare to compete in the top division.

Fitness concerns and World Cup return

Prospective clubs must weigh Tomiyasu’s quality against his recent fitness record. A serious knee injury sidelined him from July 2024 through to October 2025, representing a significant spell away from competitive action. However, he demonstrated his recovery by earning selection for Japan at the 2026 World Cup.

Negotiation stage

Reports indicate that discussions have taken place between the player’s representatives and both Italian clubs. However, no agreement has been reached with either Sassuolo or Venezia, leaving the defender’s next destination uncertain. With no transfer fee required, he represents a financially accessible option for clubs seeking defensive reinforcements this summer.
