Andrea Belotti remains a free agent after failing a medical examination with Cagliari, blocking his proposed return to the Serie A side. The 32-year-old had been ready to sign a new short-term contract following the expiry of his previous deal, but Corriere dello Sport reports that fitness concerns halted the move at the final stage.

The setback represents another blow for the former Italy international, whose initial spell in Sardinia was curtailed by serious injury. Belotti first joined Cagliari in September 2025 on a free transfer after departing Roma. However, he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament within weeks of his arrival, keeping him out for most of the campaign.

He managed just eight Serie A appearances during that spell, scoring twice before making a brief return as a substitute in April 2026. Despite his limited action, the club had been willing to offer the centre-forward another opportunity to prove his worth. Anterior cruciate ligament injuries typically require extensive rehabilitation, and the failed medical suggests Cagliari’s examinations revealed lingering issues or elevated risk factors that made the deal unviable.

Career Pedigree

The striker, nicknamed “Il Gallo”, built his reputation during a prolific tenure at Torino. He netted 116 goals in 356 top-flight appearances for the Granata, contributing 32 assists and establishing himself as one of Serie A’s most reliable forwards. His subsequent move to Roma failed to yield similar success, leading to his release and initial switch to Sardinia.

Belotti has also represented Italy at the highest level, earning 44 senior caps and scoring 12 goals for the national team. His experience and pedigree made him an attractive option for Cagliari as they looked to strengthen their attacking options without paying a transfer fee.

Uncertain Future

The failed medical leaves Belotti in limbo as he searches for employment elsewhere. At 32, and with questions surrounding the long-term effects of his knee injury, the forward may find opportunities limited until he can demonstrate full fitness to potential suitors. Cagliari will now turn their attention to alternative targets as they seek to reinforce their squad ahead of the new campaign.
